Oil India intends to capture CO2 emissions from Rajasthan, store them in dry wells

16 Jan 2024

Oil India is working on a plan to capture carbon dioxide emitted from its natural gas field in Rajasthan and store it in some dry wells nearby, which could be one of the first such projects in the country. Oil India Chairman Ranjit Rath said, "We have identified a number of initiatives as part of our net zero plans for 2040."

Oil India is well-placed to undertake carbon sequestration because it has deep knowledge of the subsurface and access too many non-successful wells that can be used to store CO2. The company's field, located in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, yields gas with a CO2 content that is approximately one-quarter of that of the surrounding region. Ranjit Rath stated that the company intends to establish a gas sweetening scheme that will eliminate CO2, thereby elevating the value of gas extracted from the field for customers.
