Thousands of northwest and northeast Calgary residents were hit with unexpected power outages on Tuesday as cold temperatures remain.Residents in Country Hills Village, Hidden Valley, Coventry Hills, Harvest Hills, Livingston and Panorama Hills neighbourhoods were affected by the power outages according to Enmax’s website.Equipment damage was the cause of the outages, but no details were provided on Enmax’s website. An Enmax spokesperson told QR Calgary power has been restored to the majority of affected customers.Calgary Fire Department’s public information officer Carol Henke confirmed to QR Calgary that fire crews received multiple calls regarding an explosion and some black smoke at an electrical box on Country Village Landing N.E.Firefighters at the scene determined it to be an electrical fire in the transformer and no other structures were damaged. No injuries were reported and backup generators were used to allow firefighters to respond to the incident, Henke said.“This is an important reminder that power outages can and do happen, and not just because of weather. It is important to be prepared,” the public information officer said in an emailed statement.
