Delhi Government to Roll Out Model EV Policy, Says CM Gupta

19 Sep 2025

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday said that the Delhi government is preparing a new model Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy and reaffirmed that the city’s entire public transport fleet will shift to electric by the end of 2026.

Speaking at an event organised by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Gupta highlighted the need for safe driving practices. “Accidents are not caused by vehicles but by negligence of drivers. In India, many people still take pride in not wearing seat belts. We need a mindset change, along with stricter enforcement of road safety rules,” she remarked. She urged citizens to follow traffic rules, not for fear of penalty but for their own safety.

The Chief Minister also pointed to Delhi’s long-standing urban challenges, including pollution, traffic congestion, and waste management, assuring that her government is actively working on solutions. “We are creating a strong market for EVs in Delhi so people have more options to adopt them. By 2026, every third vehicle in Delhi should be electric, and public transport will run fully on clean mobility. We are engaging with stakeholders to frame a Model EV Policy 2.0, with one goal to improve the capital’s air quality,” Gupta said.

Currently, the government has extended the existing EV Policy until March 31, 2026, to allow time for consultations on the new draft. Delhi’s first EV policy was launched in 2020 and has been extended multiple times after expiring in August 2023.
