Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh Lead in State Energy Efficiency Index FY24

30 Aug 2025

Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh have emerged as the top performers in the State Energy Efficiency Index (SEEI) for FY24, reflecting their strong progress in adopting policies and initiatives that promote efficient use of energy.

The index, prepared jointly by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy (AEEE), assesses states and union territories on parameters such as energy-saving programs, policy implementation, institutional capacity, and outcomes across key sectors including industry, buildings, transport, and agriculture.

In this year’s rankings, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh secured the highest scores, showcasing leadership in both policy adoption and execution of large-scale energy efficiency measures. Other states such as Karnataka, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Kerala also showed notable progress, strengthening their policy frameworks and expanding energy-saving programs.

The SEEI acts as a tool for the central and state governments to track performance, identify gaps, and encourage healthy competition among states in adopting sustainable practices. According to officials, the findings highlight the growing recognition among states that energy efficiency is not only critical for meeting climate goals but also for improving energy security and reducing costs for consumers.
The progress made under SEEI FY24 is expected to accelerate India’s journey toward its net-zero emissions target for 2070 while promoting inclusive and sustainable growth at the state level.
