NTPC Green Energy Signs Pact with Bihar to Develop Renewable Energy and Battery Storage Projects

28 Jul 2025

NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), the renewable energy subsidiary of NTPC Limited, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bihar State Power Generation Company Limited (BSPGCL) to collaborate on the development of renewable power projects and battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Bihar. The agreement marks a significant step toward strengthening Bihar’s clean energy infrastructure and supports India’s larger vision for energy transition and decarbonization.

The MoU was exchanged in the presence of Bihar’s Energy Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav and senior government officials, reflecting the state’s commitment to scaling up green power adoption. Through this partnership, NGEL and BSPGCL will jointly work on establishing both ground-mounted and floating solar projects, integrated with advanced battery storage systems. These projects are expected to provide a cleaner and more stable energy supply, manage peak power demand, and improve grid reliability across the state.

The move comes at a time when Bihar is actively seeking to modernize its energy sector and shift away from fossil fuels. The state has also shown increasing interest in harnessing emerging technologies like battery storage and pumped hydro to support renewable energy deployment. The collaboration with NTPC’s green energy arm aligns well with Bihar’s new policies aimed at promoting clean energy investments and enhancing energy access across rural and urban areas alike.

This MoU builds upon earlier agreements between NGEL and the Bihar government. Notably, at the Bihar Business Connect summit held in December 2024, NGEL signed a separate pact with the Department of Industries to explore green energy avenues including solar power, battery storage, and green hydrogen-based mobility solutions. The latest MoU reaffirms the intent to translate those ideas into actionable projects, bringing private sector efficiency and public sector scale together.

As NTPC targets 60 GW of renewable capacity by 2032, this agreement adds another milestone in its nationwide clean energy roadmap. For Bihar, the collaboration promises not just clean electricity but also long-term employment, technology transfer, and local infrastructure development. The partnership reflects a growing convergence between central and state-level initiatives to push India toward a low-carbon, energy-secure future.
