In a major step toward modernizing India’s power distribution network, REC Power Development and Consultancy Limited (RECPDCL), a wholly owned subsidiary of REC Limited, has signed a Project Implementation Agency (PIA) agreement to roll out prepaid smart meters across Gujarat. The initiative falls under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), a flagship program of the Ministry of Power aimed at improving the operational efficiency and financial sustainability of power utilities.
The agreement will enable the installation of over 33.26 lakh smart prepaid meters in the Paschim Gujarat Vij Company Limited (PGVCL) region. This deployment will be executed under the Design-Build-Finance-Own-Operate-Transfer (DBFOOT) model, involving Bharat Grid Private Limited as the selected implementing partner. The advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) is expected to significantly reduce power theft, improve billing accuracy, and empower consumers with real-time energy consumption data.
The signing ceremony, held in Rajkot, was attended by senior representatives from RECPDCL, PGVCL, and Bharat Grid. Officials emphasized that this partnership represents a transformative leap toward digitalizing electricity distribution in Gujarat. By enhancing transparency, accountability, and energy efficiency, the smart metering initiative is poised to support the broader goals of India’s energy transition and sustainable growth.
