India’s Peak Power Demand Hits Record 2,30,993 MW in May; Energy Supplied Reaches 1,48,718 MU

04 Jun 2025

In May 2025, India’s peak power demand reached a record 2,30,993 MW, according to data from the National Load Despatch Centre (NLDC). During the same month, the country consumed a staggering 1,48,718 million units (MU) of electricity, underscoring the immense energy demand typical of the summer season.

The highest daily peak demand was recorded on May 15, when the system reached 230,993 MW. This was closely followed by 2,30,007 MW on May 14 and 2,28,757 MW on May 16, according to NLDC’s daily load dispatch reports. The highest energy met for the month was recorded on May 15, reaching 5,142 MU. Other notable days with elevated energy met levels included May 16, with 5,125 MU, and May 14, with 5,072 MU.

On the lower end, May 25 recorded the month’s lowest daily peak demand at 2,00,719 MW, while energy consumption on that day was also at its lowest, totalling 4,289 MU. Throughout the month, peak demand consistently stayed above 2,00,000 MW.

The daily energy met figures fluctuated between 4,289 MU and 5,142 MU, with the majority of days falling within the 4,500–4,900 MU range. On May 1, the peak demand met reached 2,15,096 MW, accompanied by 4,841 MU of energy supplied. Demand remained relatively stable during the first part of the month before gradually increasing after May 10.

Other significant peak demands were recorded on May 20 (2,26,936 MW), May 21 (2,20,795 MW), and May 23 (2,20,359 MW). The energy supplied on these days was 5,043 MU, 4,842 MU, and 4,857 MU, respectively. NLDC data reveals a consistent rise in power demand throughout May 2025, fuelled by seasonal consumption trends and heightened industrial activity, while the system successfully sustained adequate supply levels during the entire period.
