Lockdown constraints amid second wave of Covid-19 a downside risk for electricity demand: ICRA

According to Discom officials, the peak electricity demand in Delhi reached 7265 MW on Monday, marking the highest level recorded in the past four years during the period of 1-19 May. The State Load Dispatch Centre Delhi's real-time data indicated that this demand was recorded at 7265 MW till yesterday afternoon. According to officials, the peak power demand in Delhi for the period May 1-19 was recorded at 7174 MW in 2024, 5953 MW in 2023, and 7070 MW in 2022.
According to a company’s spokesperson, BSES discoms BRPL and BYPL achieved peak power demands of 3227 MW and 1596 MW, respectively, within their service areas. According to a statement from Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL), the peak power demand reached 7265 MW on Monday (May 19), marking the highest level recorded on that day in the past five years.
The discom successfully achieved a peak demand of 2,136 MW on Monday, marking the highest level for this season to date, without facing any network limitations or supply interruptions, even amidst the prevailing hot weather conditions, as stated. The company stated that it is 'completely ready' to provide consumers with a continuous and high-quality power supply by implementing a comprehensive power procurement strategy that includes long-term bilateral agreements, reserve shutdown capacity, and dynamic involvement in the power exchange.
The BSES discoms are prepared to ensure a dependable power supply to satisfy the electricity needs of over 5 million consumers across South, West, East, and Central Delhi, as per the statement from the company spokesperson. These arrangements include long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) and banking arrangements with other states and the implementation of advanced technologies for precise power demand forecasting, he mentioned.
